Dermatology

The Dermatology service at Kings Hill Medical Centre is run by Dr Larry Shall, Consultant Dermatologist who holds an NHS consultant post at the Medway Hospital. In addition to this, Dr Halpern, Consultant Dermatologist also attends the medical centre and together they serve the whole population of West Kent.

This service consists of general Dermatology out-patient appointments plus a variety of procedures and skin treatments including the following:

  • Topical therapy for eczema, psoriasis and other inflammatory dermatoses
  • Phototherapy for psoriasis and eczema
  • Cryosurgery for warts and verrucas
  • Excision of benign lumps, bumps moles and seborrhoeic keratoses (maturity spots)

Minor procedures for:

  • Excision of benign lumps and bumps
  • Cryosurgery for warts & verrucas
  • Excision and treatment of malignant lesions such as basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas and malignant melanomas

Narrow Band UVB MachineWe are able to offer our patients Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) which is a new and highly successful method of treating superficial localized skin cancers or pre-cancers. This treatment is not currently available locally on the NHS.

On a professional basis, Dr Shall & Dr Halpern are supported by their Dermatology Healthcare Assistant, Margaret Squires who attends for each clinic. Margaret holds a NHS post at the Medway Hospital.

In accordance with our Healthcare Commission licence, children aged 3 years and over can be seen on an out-patient basis but unfortunately we are not licenced to perform procedures on children within this speciality. Paediatric nurses are present during children’s consultations at the medical centre.

Dr Shall also leads a programme of monthly training at the medical centre for all local GPs. These monthly meetings are called “skin clubs”. GPs are invited to attend and bring along patients with a skin complaint that they feel would benefit their GP colleagues in a learning platform. Dr Shall is able to give support and advice to the GPs for the best course of treatment for patients with each particular condition. This has proved a very successful and well attended meeting with the GPs.

In all cases, for consultation patients must have been referred to a Consultant Dermatologist by their GP. Self referrals cannot be accepted.
